Thierry de Duve (Belgium, 1944) is a historian and theorist of contemporary art committed to the reinterpretation of modernism, Thierry de Duve is professor emeritus at the University of Lille 3. Kirk Varnedoe Visiting Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, in 2013. His work has long revolved around Marcel Duchamp’s readymade and its implications for aesthetics, and is now finding a new center of interest in the work of Manet. De Duve is the author of several books, including the celebrated Kant After Duchamp (1996). He curated a major exhibition entitled Voici –100 ans d’art contemporain at the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts in 2000, and the Belgian pavilion at the 2003 Venice Biennial, shared by Sylvie Eyberg and Valérie Mannaerts. In 2015, Thierry de Duve was appointed Theorist in Residence for the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) MA in Aesthetics and Politics Program.
